SUMMARY Composite indicators for ranking geographical areas are more and more popular in a variety of economic and policy domains such as competitiveness, innovation, development and poverty. In this study we consider the context of quality of life evaluation carried out, at Italian provincial level, by the Italian financial newspaper ‘‘Il Sole 24ore’’. The aim of the work is to compare some different methodologies in order to synthesize a set of indicators. A particular emphasis is given to the comparison between the composite index adopted by the newspaper and a new methodology proposed by the authors. Keywords: Composite Indicators, Standardization, Penalty, Ranking.
