A binary time series model with a long-memory structure

Markov chains and Mixture Transition Distribution are the most traditional models for binary time
series. More recently, Startz (2008) has introduced a novel model for binary data, the so-called Binomial
AutoRegressive Moving Average model basically based on the comparison between theoretical
and empirical autopersistence functions. However, some economic phenomena show a longmemory
structure not captured by any of these formulations. For quarterly U.S. binary data on recession,
we show that a long-memory model for binary data can substantially improve the fit.

RIASSUNTO Le catene di Markov e i modelli Mixture Transition Distribution (MTD) sono gli strumenti maggiormente utilizzati in letteratura per il trattamento delle serie storiche binarie. In un recente articolo, Startz (2008) ha introdotto una nuova classe di modelli per serie storiche binarie. Tale categoria di modelli, identificata dalla sigla BARMA (Binomial Autoregressive Moving Average), si basa principalmente sul confronto tra gli andamenti delle funzioni di autopersistenza empiriche e quelli delle funzioni teoriche. Tuttavia alcuni fenomeni economici manifestano una componente di lungo memoria che non è catturata da queste formulazioni. Per i dati binari trimestrali sulle recessioni statunitensi, si dimostra che una tipologia di modelli a lunga memoria, propri per le serie storiche binarie, riesce a garantire un sostanziale miglior adattamento. |
